"In Portland I was offered cocaine, in Seattle a threesome, in LA cocaine and a threesome. (That I refuse such offers is by the by; it's the thought that counts.) A guy tried to pick me up in a New York cabaret bar, which was a great relief as I've always found it upsetting that dudes don't find me attractive. " -Tim Minchin
Ten things I hate challenge - # 3. People who cannot debate an issue, but instead merely state their opinions and become enraged or belligerant if you dare to express any views to the contrary.
To my mind, the point of an argument is to address the issue that has led to a difference in understanding - and consequently caused a grievance - and thereby reach an amicable solution, or at least a tolerable compromise.
However, such resolution is impossible if either one or both parties refuses to listen to the other person’s point of view; this is a fallacy of both logic and ignorance. If both people can explain why they feel the way that they do, then surely it will be so much easier to come to a satisfactory conclusion?
But merely yelling one’s obstinate opinion at one another accomplishes nothing. Nothing resolved, no progress made, and your relationship to one another - whatever that maybe be - possibly severely damaged.
This “thing I hate” seagues nicely into my next point: people who cannot substantiate their opinions.
Ten things I hate challenge - # 2. People who fuck and tell.
Continuing from the previous “thing I hate” - when publically discussing someone, no matter how much you detest them, you do not post sexual and/or private details about them. The only person you’re making look disgusting is yourself. I noticed about five different people doing this to somebody I’ve never met - a total character assasination.
If you don’t like somebody, fine, tell them to their face. Don’t get a group of your mates and discuss how bad you heard she was in bed.
What really pissed me off, was that after somebody said what a horrible personality she had, somebody else asked: “One question: is she attractive?”
Excuse me, but WTF? As if that’s remotely relevent? As if, if she were, it would be a redeeming feature? Frankly it sounds like this girl would be justified in being a bitch if she’s only valued for her appearence anyway - and if she’s surrounded by such dickheads.
Ten things I hate challenge - # 1. Guys who add girls based on their overtly sexy profile pictures, and who then complain that these girls are vacuous and/or slutty.
I’ve noticed a lot of guys ranting about this recently, and really laying into specific people in a really vulgar and personal manner. Sure, there seems to be a profusion of tattooed and pierced “scene girls” who post attention seeking - and yes, attention grabbing - pictures.
And hell, if you don’t like that, fair enough.
But in that case…. don’t fucking add them in the first place. Seriously - you complain about girls seeking attention for their looks, when you gave them that attention in the first place? If you decide to associate with someone on the basis of their appearance, don’t you think it’s just a little hypocritical to then castigate them for flaunting said appearance?
