pap-smear said: Do you have a source for the mercury post? I would love to have it
It was something that I saw posted on imgur, if I remember correctly. I think that there was an article attached. I thought that it looked cool, so I posted it on here… turns out that people REALLY love pictures of planets, haha. I’ve found a link to the original NASA article, not sure Tumblr will allow me to include it in the message however, so just google “clearest photo of mercury” and “NASA”, it should come up. :)
Something to bear in mind: whilst it is purportedly the clearest photo in terms of sharpness, NASA do routinely post-edit the colouration of most of their photos, in order to make them as informative as possible [a certain colour might represent aspects of topography or natural resources, for example, or wavelengths of light invisible to the naked human eye]. It also compensates for the fact that most cameras used to photograph space are black and white, for superior quality images. This isn’t a secret, in fact I’d consider it to be fairly common knowledge, but it still surprises people when they first find out.
